This turned out to be Diploschistes scruposus

Originally recorded in 1968 and mentioned in the
Brown & Brown Paper from that date.
but has not been recorded since - until now.
In actual fact it looks like this was misidentified at the time.

Gourgeous dark brown and spikey when dry. After twelve hours in a pot it was slightly more lax and a slightly lighter colour.
